A series of five photographs of indigenous Queenslanders 40 years after the referendum that recognised them as 'Australians' - depicting the issues of homelessness, community conditions, indigenous life expectancy and juvenile crime.

Indigenous Affairs dominate the Australian media during the year - the Cameron Doomadgee (Mulrunji) death in custody, riots in aboriginal communities, continued debate over 3rd world conditions and the unprecedented action by the Federal Government, even the eviction of a 105 year old aboriginal woman - amongst the issues photographed in communities across Queensland.

Miraculously no lives were lost, however, it left a large percentage of the population with shattered homes, business’s and lives. These photographs span the period from the moment Cyclone Larry hit to the continuing turmoil 3 months later.

Australia's worst air crash in 40 years claimed 15 lives at Lockhart River on Cape York 7th May 2005. A memorial service in Cairns saw huge outpourings of grief as families came to terms with their tragedy. Amongst the victims was young police officer Sally Urquhart . Her fiance Trad Thornton - and family - mother Elizabeth, dad Shane, brother Brendan and sister Natalie - were inconsolable throughout the ceremony.

The Boxing Day 2004 tsunami in Asia decimated countries bordering the Indian Ocean, claimed almost three hundred thousand lives and left many millions homeless. This collection of photographs culled from my short journeys to Banda Aceh Indonesia, Phuket and Khoa Lak Thailand and southern Myanmar won two awards "across all media".

"The Tear"
18 month old Alhamdee sheds a tear in a refugee camp in Banda Aceh Indonesia nearly two weeks after the Boxing Day tsunami brought unprecendented devastation to the city. One of many thousands homeless and with insufficient food and water in Aceh's refugee camps, Alhamdee also lost his father, brother, grand parents and uncle to the tsunami and is left with only his mother.

Despite the pain, badly injured West Australian Laurie Kerr insists on walking unaided into Royal Darwin Hospital Australia 13th October 2002 - just a day after the Bali Indonesia terrorist bomb blasts. Kerr was on the first airlift aircraft out of Bali to Darwin Australia along with fourteen other severely injured Australian, Canadian and US victims.

Ethnic Indian farmers Sapaya and Gayn Datt weep over the destruction of their house in Muaniweni, west of Suva Fiji 2nd August 2000. The home was one of many torched by supporters of George Speight's coup in race related violence. The photograph was published extensively in Australia (Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian and many others) and world wide.

1999 Hurley Awards for Outstanding Press Photography - NEWS - MERIT AWARD
86 year old Arthur Stanley Brown was arrested and ordered to stand trial in Townsville for the brutal murder of the Mackay sisters, Judith (7) and Susan (5) 29 years previously. The photo of Brown and his wife Charlotte was taken during a break in proceedings from outside the court house and through a plate glass wall. It was published page 3 of the Age, Melbourne. All charges against Brown were eventually dropped due to his deteriorating state of health. He died a year later and consequently was never found guilty of the murders.

Papua New Guinea Tsunami Disaster - July 1998
On the 17th of July 1998 three ten metre waves slammed into the coast of the West Sepik province of Papua New Guinea, wiping entire villages off the map. Much of the population perished in that few minutes - the majority of the victims children. I was the first photographer to reach the remote Sissano Lagoon disaster area - and this photo of Coretta Yorenti, suffering a fractured skull, was the first to reach the outside world. Transmitted to Associated Press by satelite phone it was then syndicated and published world wide.

The murder of young Japanese tourist Michiko Okuyama in Cairns Australia sent Japanese and Australian media into a frenzy. Her body was found dumped in a Cairns swamp and a 16 year old youth was arrested for her murder.In a bizarre twist it was alleged that the acccused wheeled the body five kilometres through city streets to the swamp in a rubbish bin - in broad daylight. Despite police assurances that the accused youth had already been sent to Brisbane detention I was not convinced and staked out the police air wing for several days - before being rewarded with the only photograph of the accused - deliberately obscuring his face so the photo could be published in Australia.

10th October 1996 - Six year old Tjandamurra O'Shane made world headlines when a complete stranger doused him with petrol in his Cairns school playground and set him alight. He was rushed by air to Brisbane Hospital with burns to seventy percent of his body.Paul Wade Streeton was arrested and charged with attempted murder. On the day Streeton was found guilty at the Cairns Court House months later Tjandamurra's father stopped his car briefly outside the court. Tjandamurra, with burn scars still evident, glared at the scene where his attacker was being judged.

This photo of Cairns sail boarder Peter Clifford competing in the WindToys Slalom Series at Trinty Beach Australia was an after thought entry in what was to be the final year of the Kodak/adidas Australian Sports photo awards. It was awarded second place overall.

His only injuries in a spectacular fall was a broken wrist and dented ego.The three pics that follow are just half of a sequence of six photos that impressed the Rothmans judges.
